Smriti Aryal

Country Representative, UN Women China 

Smriti Aryal is UN Women’s Country Representative in China. She joined UN Women China in July 2019. 

Smriti is a national of Nepal with over 23 years of professional experience in international development and humanitarian assistance, acquired both within and outside the United Nations.

Before arriving in China, Smriti served as Head of the Office in Myanmar (2018-2019). She also held key leadership roles, such as UN Women’s Regional Advisor and UNAIDS Regional Advisor between 2008 and 2017, based in Bangkok, and with UNICEF from 2000 to 2006. She has worked with a wide range of stakeholders, including regional and national governments, CSOs, and the UN across 12 countries. She brings a strong background in public policy development, strategic planning, and strategic partnership in various international development issues. Smriti has authored and published numerous documents, and has served as a peer reviewer at several international conferences and journals.

Smriti holds a master’s degree in Public Health from University College London, UK, and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Gender Studies from Oregon State University, USA. She is married with two children, and currently lives in Beijing.
